Cephalopod ontogeny and life cycle patterns

چکیده

Life cycle definitions provide the background for conceptualizing meaningful questions to address mechanisms that generate different life patterns. This review provides explicit and explanations of steps in a cephalopod cycle, from fertilization death. Each large step, or phase, is characterized by particular developmental process morphology. phase composed smaller developmentally distinct steps, stages. The comprised all some following phases: Embryonic, Paralarval, Juvenile, Subadult, Adult Senescent, each taxon-specific. All cephalopods have direct development maintain consistent body plan throughout ontogeny (i.e., no true larval metamorphosis). Most marked long early short adult followed senescence. Cephalopods two modes: they produce either small planktonic hatchlings as paralarvae, juveniles. go through Hatchling stage soon after eclosion during which rely on modes nutrition: endogenous (yolk) exogenous (prey). Many with paralarvae will become benthic their Settlement remain pelagic Metapelagic stage. Juvenile growth fast ontogenetic changes (outside gonadal maturation) generally cease at end phase. Subadult begins when definitive morphology (except size proportions) acquired (e.g., full complement photophores). Sexual organs undergo most starts spawning competency concludes gonads are spent. Senescent spent ends Using this new terminology, we examine patterns cycles find there four main based presence Paralarval habitat occupied phase: Holopelagic (all phases pelagic), Holobenthic benthic), Merobenthic Meropelagic (phases alternate between environments). In these last patterns, difference species. terminology proposed here unifying framework future ecological, evolutionary research cephalopods.

Ontogeny and Life Cycle of Dendritic Cells

D endritic cells (DC) are bone marrow-derived professional antigen-presenting cells (APC) which link innate and adaptive immune responses and which exhibit the exclusive ability of initiating primary immune responses by promoting the proliferation and polarisation of antigen-specific naïve T lymphocytes. This unique capacity derives from their high level of expression of MHC, co-stimulatory and...

Life Cycle and Refactoring Patterns that Support Evolution and Reuse

Software development can be characterized in terms of prototype (or initial design) phases, expansion phases and consolidation phases. During a consolidation phase, some relationships, initially modeled using inheritance, may be evolved to aggregations. Also, during consolidation, abstrasct classes are sometimes de ned to capture behavior common to two or more existing classes. In this paper, w...

Ontogeny and Identification of Life-Cycle Stages of Criconema octangulare (Cobb, 1914) Taylor, 1936.

The ontogeny of Criconema octangulare (Cobb, 1914) Taylor, 1936, is examined and shows ovary development and body length to be of primary importance in differentiating its life-cycle stages. Second-stage juveniles can be identified by body length and ovary length. The third stage can be distinguished from the second by longer body and ovary length, and from the fourth by a shorter ovary. The fo...

Ontogeny of early life immunity.

The human immune system comprises cellular and molecular components designed to coordinately prevent infection while avoiding potentially harmful inflammation and autoimmunity. Immunity varies with age, reflecting unique age-dependent challenges including fetal gestation, the neonatal phase, and infancy. Here, we review novel mechanistic insights into early life immunity, with an emphasis on em...

Large-Scale Spatio-Temporal Patterns of Mediterranean Cephalopod Diversity

Species diversity is widely recognized as an important trait of ecosystems' functioning and resilience. Understanding the causes of diversity patterns and their interaction with the environmental conditions is essential in order to effectively assess and preserve existing diversity. While diversity patterns of most recurrent groups such as fish are commonly studied, other important taxa such as...
